	Although the headline events of the Fête Nouormande take place over the weekend, look out for the street entertainment in St. Helier in the days leading up to the big events. Why not sample some local and Norman produce in the markets and shops? Why not try out a couple of words of Jèrriais?
	Même avant le grand weekend de la Fête Nouormande 2002, les rues de St. Hélier sont animées. Venez voir les danseurs et les musiciens. Venez apprécier la signalétique bilingue et la promotion de produits normands et jersiais dans les marchés de la Ville.

	Monday 3rd June and Tuesday 4th June were Jubilee Bank Holidays. On Monday 3rd June, as part of BBC Music Live, Jèrriais singers performed in traditional costume in Wests Centre from 1pm - including the "musical beacon" All You Need Is Love in Jèrriais. Unfortunately, rain stopped play for the singing on Tuesday - but the bachîn was "ringing in the rain"!
	Lundi l'3 d'Juîn et Mardi l'4 dé Juîn 'taient des jours dé fête pouor lé Jubilé d'la Reine not' Duc. Lundi 'tait l'jour dé BBC Music Live étout, et l's êtudgiants chantîtent Tout ch'qu'i' faut est qu'j't'aime en ville dans Wests Centre chu jour-là à 1h dé l'arlevée. Malheutheusement, y'eût trop d'plyie pouor chanter Mardi, mais j'fînmes braithe les peîles!
	Lundi 3 juin et mardi 4 juin sont des jours fériés à Jersey, comme au Royaume Uni, pour célébrer le Jubilé de la Reine. Dans le cadre des animations musicales jubilaires nationales du lundi 3 juin, les Jèrriais ont présenté des chansons à 13h dans la place Wests Centre au Centre-Ville de St. Hélier. Des communautés partout dans les Îles Britanniques ont été réunies dans la chanson des Beatles All You Need Is Love. Bien sûr, les Jèrriais l'ont chantée en Jèrriais. La pluie de mardi empêchait les chanteurs - mais on sonnait la bassine quand même!

	Une lecture de poésie en Jèrriais a eu lieu dans le bar du Jersey Arts Centre à St. Hélier à 18h. Sous le titre de “Réflexions Rouoyales”, on a récité et expliqué des poèmes avec un lien royal - ce qui s'explique par la proximité du Jubilé de la Reine, qui est reconnue dans les Îles de la Manche en tant que Duc de Normandie.

	Autrefois à Jersey, on sonnait les bassines à la Saint Jean. Cette musique extraordinaire a éé de nouveau entendue à St. Hélier pendant les jours avant le grand weekend de la Fête.
	J'avons fait braithe les peîles pouor la Fête Nouormande. Ch'est eune couôteunme qu'nou soulait pratitchi en Jèrri à la St. Jean, et il est bein l'heuthe dé la ravigoter!
	During the week, the old tradition of "faithe braithe les peîles" (bachîn ringing) was revived. Did you know that bachîns used to be used in Jersey as weird and wonderful musical instruments to celebrate midsummer?

La Sagesse Nouormande, a group specialising in traditional music from France and the Channel Islands, consists of

• Peter Hughes (chifournie et mandola - hurdy-gurdy and mandola)
• Geoff Huggins (fliûtes à bé, saxophone et hautbouais Allemand - recorders, saxophone and rauschpfeife)
• Roland Scales (vouaix, concèrtina, pouques à vent Française et Angliaîche, et chifournie - voice, concertina, French and English bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy).

Geoff (l'barbu - the bearded one) is a highly accomplished woodwind player with eclectic musical interests including early and classical music. He is widely known on both the orchestral and folk music circuits in Kent.

Peter (l'caûque - the bald one) is a member of the Massif Village Orchestra, an unusual band of about 120 musicians specialising in the traditional dance music of Central France, in addition to his barn-dance and morris dance work and an active interest in Brazilian percussion.

Roland (l'gros - the fat one) is a middle-aged Franco-Brit who enjoys dabbling in languages, and who is singular among the inhabitants of Watford in that he frequently sings in Catalan and Jèrriais while sitting on the loo. He lives by himself.

Geoff and Roly are two-thirds of an early music group called Codpiece Replica, while Roly and Pete have played for dancing at the St-Chartier festival in France on a number of occasions.

The group is part of an association called L'Assembllaïe D'Guernesias which was formed in 1956 to preserve the language and culture of Guernsey. After some time it was realised that our dances were being forgotten and so the dance group was formed in 1965. This group has performed on many occasions both inside and out of doors since that date at all sorts of functions both in Guernsey, France and we were privileged to dance in Leuven, Belgium for a four day festival at Easter 2000.

Unfortunately songs and dances were not written down and were only passed down from one generation to another, however in 1970 The book of Guernsey Songs & Dances was published and this book contains some of the dances which we perform.

The present leaders of the group Jim & Angela de Garis having danced in the group for many years took over the leadership in 1998 and managed to recruit new members and find an accordionist. We are the only group in the Channel Islands dedicated to preserving our national songs & dances. The group comprises twenty four lively members (one accordionist and 23 dancers) who enjoy performing and are happy to share their knowledge with anyone who is interested.

Our costumes are copies of dresses which were worn by ladies & gentlemen in Guernsey during the 19th century when the dances we perform were at their most popular. We have a varied programme of twenty-two traditional dances using different formations unforunately not all of the original melodies have survived so we have had to improvise and use modern music. Our dances have a strong French influence and we have seen variation of these dances on our travels in France. Our native language is Guernesias which is a Norman French patois and we are fortunate that three quarters of our members speak and understand our national language. Two of the absolute favourite dances are called La Bébé and Le Tallon. These two dances were always danced at every family gathering and because the melodies are fairly simple they have survived.

In the Markets, fruit, vegetables, fish and meat will be labelled in Jèrriais. David Pipon at the St. Helier Food and Wine Company in the Fish Market will be offering free Calvados tasting, and promoting Norman cider, perry and cheeses.
