The publication of this book is designed to make the learning of Jèrriais amusing and interesting to young and old alike.
Jèrriais is the Jersey language and is a Norman dialect with an ancient heritage. It originated in the 10th century when Viking words were incorporated with medieval French in the region of Normandy, the land of the Northmen or Normans. It preserves many Celtic, Latin and Frankish words as well as those from Norse and latterly from English.
lt is still spoken in Jersey by several thousand people who are often trilingual, as French and English are needed for different aspects of Jersey life. At present it is being taught on a voluntary basis in most primary schools through the services of the Department of Education of the States of Jersey and Le Don Balleine Trust, a trust which publishes literature in Jèrriais.
La Section dé la Langue Jèrriaise of La Société Jersiaise selected the format of the highly successful First Thousand Words publications of Usborne Publishing and based the present book on the new French edition.
The French was translated by members of the Section, several of whom are native Jèrriais speakers, and the Jèrriais words were selected after much discussion about the many variations throughout the island. In each case, the final choice, and its spelling, was based on the most generally accepted and understood word and the one used most commonly in the Dictionnaire Jersiais-Français by F. Le Maistre and the English-Jersey Language Vocabulary by A. Carré. In rare cases French and English words have been retained by virtue of their common usage. The variations mentioned can be found in the above texts and learned at a later date.
The Jèrriais words were subsequently edited by Section members, L. Hueûlîn, also of Le Don Balleine and R. Nichols, and by A. Scott Warren, the Education Department Co-ordinator, who verified that they were consistent with those in his teaching resource, Lé Neu C'mîn.
This first edition will hopefully cause some discussion and produce alternative words. The Section will be very grateful for any further advice, corrections or amendments and is indebted to all who have helped.
