Old Lithograph of Wesley Grove, Methodist Church, Jersey, Channel Islands

Methodism in the Channel Islands

The definitive book is probably "Methodism in the Channel Islands" by R.D. Moore (1952). It does not have any index. This page is an attempt to partially redress that omission. It is not an index, but simply a list of names. (Further information is available on some names with hypertext links.) Other sources are listed here. R.D. Moore's own sources are listed here.

There is also a list of Methodist ministers given in the appendix of " Histoire du Methodism dans les Iles de la Manche" by Matthieu Lelievre listed here, and a list of chapel dates with names of ministers preaching at their dedication listed here.

There is also a copy of a letter written in 1787 by Adam Clarke to John Wesley on the occasion of his missionary visit to Alderney - click here.

The list below gives the mention of any names in the book, together with a page number;.Methodists (local and UK) are in one column, other names mentioned are in another.

Some Methodists are mentioned throughout large sections of the book, and only the initial page number is given.

Not surprisingly, John Wesley 's name is present on almost every page, so has not been included.

The detail in the book varies - some names have virtually whole chapters about their work, others are just listed as signatories to documents. The detail concentrates on their work as Methodists in the Channel Islands, no detailed biographical information (such as date of birth etc.) is given. The book is best used for filling in additional information when such geneological links are already known.

If you want a specific lookup for a name mentioned and not shown in the links, e-mail me on am_bellows@hotmail.com.

News - The Galaad Methodist Church building in St Lawrence was built in 1832, but is due to be sold off in Spring 2003. For full story, click here.
