Not everyone realises that hidden in the placenames of Grève de Lecq and Grève d'Azette is the simple Jèrriais word for beach - la grève. Les gens sé solilyissent au solé sus la grève en Êté (People sunbathe on the beach in Summer).
Tch'est qu'i' y'a sus la grève? (What is there on the beach?) Among things we can find are lé sablion (sand), la mé (the sea), lé vrai (vraic, seaweed), un pits dg'ieau (a rock pool), un rotchi (a rock), eune êcale (a shell) and un galot (a pebble).
Tch'est qu'les gens font sus la grève? (What do people do on the beach?) Another way of saying "to sunbathe" in Jèrriais apart from sé solilyi, is s'couochi lé ventre au solé which literally means to lie down with one's stomach to the sun. The word for "to swim" is nagi, and un nageux is a swimmer. To talk about windsurfing you can say la plianche à vaile. Les mousses aiment faithe les châtchieaux d'sablion (Children like making sandcastles). So they need a bucket and spade: un boutchet and eune pelle.
Some of the wildlife on the beach is un vlicot (a winkle), un baîni (a limpet), eune crabe (a crab) et les mauves sont partout! (and the seagulls are everywhere!)
