Les Fieillets Jèrriais

Novembre 1998

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness!

The Black Butter making at the Germain’s domain was excellent and over 400 pots were filled to the brim.

The Cider making also went well, with many people enjoying the event.

The November meeting was a stimulating one, with discussion of the budget promoting some vigorous debate about a compilation of songs as a record of those presently available en Jèrriais and recent compositions adapted to well known tunes used by the students in recent years.

The major part of the meeting centred on finishing the remaining pages of our book "Les Preunmièrs Mille Mots" and congratulations to everyone present for the way each word was researched and discussed. Fair copies will now be made for rigorous scrutiny and editing. The knowledge of those fluent in Jèrriais was invaluable and their help in editing will be incalculable.

New names for the Jersey Museum Service were also discussed which will be forwarded to the Director for consideration by the Jersey Museum Service.

The Eisteddfod is the next event on the calendar, Monday and Tuesday, November 23rd and 24th at 7.30pm, La Salle Publique, St Martin, followed by our December meeting on Wednesday, December 2nd at 8.00 pm at Le Hocq, and the Annual Service at St. Andrew’s Church on Saturday December 5th at 7.30pm.

At our Annual Meeting on January 7th at 8.00pm at the Société, part of the evening will be election of officers for 1999, e.g. Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and 3 Committee Members. Presently these are J. Le B Nichols, R. Nichols, N. Molyneux, C. Everard, L. Manning & F. Le Maistre. All are willing to continue but nominations are requested by proposers and seconders to be returned to the Section Secretary at the Société Jersiaise no later than 2 weeks after the December meeting i.e. Wednesday 16th December, 1998.

Djonnyi Le Mousse sent us a letter and cuttings illustrating that Jèrriais had been used in times past to advertise Guinness! at the airport, and also on advertisements and beer mats. He comments too on the value of teaching Jèrriais and again on the possible use of Jèrriais on Jersey bank notes with the Euro being introduced; the latter has been explored.

Until Wednesday, December 2nd, 8.00pm at Le Hocq when traditional refreshments will be provided whilst singing!
