Les Fieillets Jèrriais

Mai 2007

Salutâtions tout l’monde. Ch’est le mais d’La Fête Normande et La Foire de Jersey.
Thank you to those who attended last month’s meeting, it was very useful for us. The exercise in compiling a simple alphabet of objects which begin with the same letter in English, French and Jèrriais was interesting and taxing.
La Fête Normande (or des Rouaisons) takes place in Briquebec, northern Cotentin during the week of May 14th but for the Jersey contingent, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 18, 19, 20th with members making their own arrangements with respect to transport and accommodation.
La Foire de Jersey takes place on the long weekend of 26, 27, 28th. May at the RJA&HS ground in Trinity. The Congrès and associated Jèrriais groups will have a stand for publicity and sales of books and resources for learning the language at all ages.
In addition, this month sees the launch of our superb Collection of Jersey Literature a lovely mixture of all sorts of writings in Jèrriais during the last 150 years. We hope this will be launched on Wednesday 14th. May in the Members’ Room of La Société Jersiaise between 5.30-6.00pm. with a press/photo shoot. There is no pre-publication offer.
On Sunday 6th May, a yacht, possibly an old gaffer, named Astrée, will arrive at Gorey harbour at about 11.00am from Normandy to advertise La Fête Normande. The Normans on board would like to meet as many Jèrriais as possible.
Errors this month are typical and reflect the dyslexia exhibited when our commentators and printers mix up Le, La and Les (so proposed by Jean Le Maistre!) The following are to be seen on the new blue and white ‘Welcome’ signs along La Grande Route des Mielles (5- mile road). Welcome to ‘La Port’ and ‘La Braye’! Possibly the sign writers carried on regardless after welcoming people to La Carrière!
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, 2nd, May at 8.00pm in the Arthur Mourant Room at La Société for finalising details of the launch, the two Fêtes and language practice.
