Les Fieillets Jèrriais

Mai 2006

Salutâtions tout l'monde. Ch'est lé mais d'mai – and Spring seems to have arrived. Thank you to everyone who attended last month's meeting and I'm happy to report that the reviewing and editing of the Anthology is progressing slowly and surely.
I'm also pleased to report that we have received several poems in Norman from Denise Veron as part of the exchange mentioned in April's Fieillets. These will be interesting exercises for us in the coming months in between Anthology work.
Last month's error in the old Jersey toast, mentioned by only one member, made 'dent ' masculine; the line should have read 'Bouonne dent'; please accept our apologies for not checking.
Speaking of which, this month's exercise for corrections shows the value of learning both the gender and spelling of nouns and adjectives at the same time; check these if you will.

The difficulty for us when we started, stemmed from the word 'Jèrriais' being used as a noun for both the language and the people, and being used as an adjective when describing masculine objects. It then becomes confusing for beginners when it is used as an adjective for feminine objects – but it's just like French! All comments to us please for next month's issue!

Next month's meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 3rd. at 8.00pm in the Arthur Mourant Room at La Société when we shall have a progress report on the Anthology and much welcomed practice in writing and speaking in the past tenses(s).
