Les Fieillets Jèrriais

Févri 2001

Salutâtions tout l'monde. Thank you for such a good attendance at our Annual Meeting at which the enclosed programme was agreed. The Arthur Mourant Room is excellent, the computer facilities arc on line and the refreshment area is well equipped. The Annual Report was well received and will be forwarded to the editors for inclusion in the Bulletin. The programme includes more language practice and chances to develop language projects which will run alongside any short rehearsals for those wishing to enter competitions.

Les Preunmié Mille Mots will be launched by the Bailiff on Saturday, 3rd February, at 12 noon and will be on sale from next week at La Société and, probably, The Printed Word, at a cost of about £5.95.

John Clark has sent us a copy of an amusing short story from the Almanach des Chroniques de Jersey, 1947 (no author given), to introduce the Year of the Jersey Cow! It seems to be an interesting mixture of language(s) and spelling and should tax those wishing to improve their skills.

Two further cases of mis-pronunciation heard via the local TV and radio were:- Con eta bul (as in syllable), and Lemprière Street, pronounced Lempriez, (as in lemon). It is good news that Laurie Huelin and John Denize are making recordings of correct pronunciation for road and family names and titles to help the broadcasting media; they will be of great benefit to all of us learning the language.

Our next meeting as per the programme will be held on Wednesday, 7th February, at 8.00 pm, in the Arthur Mourant Room at La Société, Pier Road.
