Reminiscences -Wayne Le Cuirot
I was held in captivity at Victoria College from 1971 to
1978.
Dereck Cotteril doubled as an excellent history master and
the reader of school prayers at assembly. One morning he got up in
front of the school realising the deathly quiet may not have been
entirely due to respect towards the ensuing ceremony. At the top of
his voice he shouted out towards the slumbering throng to wake up as
he could be reciting any old rubbish for the amount of attention he
was liable to get. It had the desired effect as amid much murmur
everyone pricked up their ears and listened to his reading of the
parable concerning the prodigal son!
Rudi Wragg , a fellow pupil, had a fascination for
explosives. While waiting one morning for the French teacher to
arrive in class he set off a banshee rocket which hit the ceiling and
whirled around amongst a plume of smoke. There followed a frantic
opening of windows to allow fresh air to disperse the residue which
was soon followed by the teacher. He summoned up the courage to ask
what had been going on to be told that a backfiring lorry had just
gone past. He didn’t appear to be too convinced but felt it more
convenient to let things pass.
