Reminiscences - Jerry Collins
I remember that Tricker (Brian Tricker, head science master)
was reputed to have had significant input into the design of the new
science block, including some ingenious stools that had a backrest
that turned into a writing rest, if you moved it around. I also
remember meeting him at Charterhouse School on a football tour after
he had left Victoria, so I assume that's where he moved to.
John (Jack) Fearon was a lovely chap. I remember him coming
to meet the Schools' cruise ship SS.Nevassa at some Greek port, after
he had retired. I'm not sure if he moved out there or was just on
holiday. I also remember
him persuading another school master to postpone one of my
"Books", so that I could swim against Elizabeth College.
The only other one I've got a decent (printable) story on is
Stephen (Spike) Lucas. Although he wasn't a music teacher, he was a
very good pianist, and one night when I was about 19 or 20 years old,
I was meeting some friends in the Royal Yacht Hotel at the
Weighbridge. As a few of us walked down Mulcaster Street, there was a
power cut - all the lights went out, and it was pitch black when we
walked into the Yacht. We sat down and waited in the dark, and then
the piano started up. It must have been a full twenty minutes that
the mystery player took requests, and when the lights came on again
he got a huge round of appause. Of course it was Spike, and we bought
him a drink.
