Farmers are being warned to stay vigilant after a single case of BSE was confirmed in a Jersey dairy herd.
States Vet Mike Nichols says it's the second case within a year in Jersey. The animal has already been slaughtered.
At the end of last year, a local dairy farmer suspected one of his cows had BSE and informed veterinary authorities.
The cow was immediately slaughtered at the abbatoir but tests have only just confirmed it did have BSE.
Its three surviving female offspring were also slaughtered under BSE regulations.
The farmer wil receive compensation from the States for all the slaughtered animals.
It's the second case since April last year when there hadn't been a case of BSe in Jersey for two years.
Between 1988 and 1999 there were 149 cases.
States vet Mike Nichols says the case underlines the need for farmers to watch out for cases among their herds.
Mr Nichols says controls and testing proceedures are staying in place to stop BSE entering the human food chain.
