Les Fieillets Jèrriais

Septembre 2002

Salutâtions tout l'monde, ch'est septembre et lé temps fait comme s'tembre! We had a pleasant Barbe-à Queue at Les Mielles last month and the attached is an attempt by our secretary to show us what it can be like, and to increase our vocabulary!
Nothing contentious came to our knowledge last month and it was good to see the French name, Les Vanniers, being kept for the new apartments on La Route de St. Aubin. In contrast, a letter addressed to us in “St. Louothains” had “St. Lawrence” written alongside by someone at the GPO! Should we send our thanks and appreciation to the relevant committee? Other good news is that Dominic Egré is writing the programme to transpose the completed letters of the Vocabulaithe for a trial run, hopefully in the next two weeks.
However, in August, we were very saddened to hear of the passing away of Dr Frank. It is almost impossible for us to assess his contribution to Jèrriais but he was a guiding light to us. In the early days of the Section in 1995 we visited him several times to talk about our aims and he was only too pleased and happy to help us and to pass on some of his wonderful store of knowledge and expertise. He took the time to write cards and notes to us giving advice and guidance and was always kind and encouraging, socially and practically, as well as critical about the things we were doing! We managed to return some of this when we presented him with a copy of Les Preunmié Mille Mots. He remarked with pleasure on its colour and presentation and encouraged us to continue. On behalf of the Section we would like to extend our sympathy and condolences to François, Jean and Edouard and their families.
To keep things going, our September meeting is scheduled for Wednesday next, September 4th, in the Arthur Mourant room, Pier Road, at 8.00pm, when we should catch up on our projects, think about the Eisteddfod and perhaps try some of the “gammes en Jèrriais” in the programme!

À la préchaine,

Jayne Le B. Nichols.
