The Société Jersiaise
The Société Jersiaise was founded on the 28th January 1873. An executive committee was formed and the aims laid down to be the study of the history and the language of the island, the conservation of the antiquities of the island and the publication of historic documents etc. Three Sections were created;-- for Jersey’s Archeology, for Language and for History. On the 28th January 1875, the joint honorary secretaries published the first Annual Bulletin containing a report of the Society’s first study - the excavation of the cromlech “ Les Cinq Pierres” in the parish of St. Brelade. Human bones, stone tools and pottery chards were unearthed, carefully catalogued and stored. The inaugural members were as follows.
