Connétables

The origins of this office are obscure but first surviving historic references are from the fifteenth century.   The Connétable is the secular head of a parish and in early times it appears he was appointed by recommendation of the Governors and Jurats.  Later, he was elected to office by the 'elders' -  the senior and influential members of the parish.  Today, this officer represents the parish by election of all parishioners and currently has, ex officio, a seat in the island's Legislature.    Also at present,  the term of Office is for three years and a Connétable may stand again for re-election if desired.    A Connétable could be loosely equated to a Mayor in other parts of Europe.   For parish policing matters he is assisted by honorary parish Centeniers and Constable's Officers.
