Bailiffs

By the 14th century, Jersey's Gardiens were selecting and delegating bailli or Bailli du Gardien as Juge-Délégué, a life appointment.  In the 17th century the position became also a separate Crown Appointment, that of President of the Island's legislature, the States of Jersey.   The Bailiff is still the Island's chief magistrate and head of the Judiciary. The office of Bailiff is both judicial and legislative but is not administrative.  In this century a bailiff himself now has the power to appoint a Deputy Bailiff to act his functions during absence.
