13th to 15th Century

In this period, the Sovereign as Duke of Normandy, instructed Commissioners to hold Assizes and Investigations regarding Channel Island Crown Fiefs to maintain the good order of his lands. The scope of these lands, tenements and rentes were recorded in Extentes.  From the 12th century Assizes were held every three years and were conducted by visiting Justices from Normandy.  From the 13th century the Wardens or the Gardiens/Bailiffs were responsible. Visiting Justices from England were also commissioned to inquire into complaints against the Administration.  A few Assize Rolls (recorded in the latin language) and some Extentes survive today (the National Archives, Kew) and are the only proof of the family names of Channel Islanders of that time.   If a name was found repeated in subsequent documents it is not listed here a second time, for the sake of brevity. Some other surviving documents,  from this early time,  included the names:-

Bauche.   Gaudin.    Grandin.      Hacquoil.   Hue.    Le Filliastre.      Machon.    Pirouet.

The Jersey Chantry Certificate of 1550

In the religious life of the European Middle Ages, a person with the means to do so could make provision for Masses to be said ( recited or chanted ) after his death - by an endowment to the Church.   In Jersey, endowments were usually in the form of a rente  and would ensure that masses, a chantry, were said at the altar for the repose of the soul of the departed.
Some records (certificates) of these endowments have survived. ( UK.PRO)
Certain members of La Société Jersiaise in 1975, led by Mr. Sydney Bisson M.A., transcribed one such original manuscript and the following names were found in that Chantry Certificate of 1550.
Each family name is followed by the given names of any mentioned in the certificate.
