Prices are in pre-decimal currency (£,s,d) where 12 pence (12d) equalled one shilling (1s or 1/-) and 20 shillings (20s) equalled one pound £1.

Le Poidevin was a clothing shop in St Helier which closed in the late1990s.


Victoria College is a Public School represented on the Headmasters' Conference. The Preparatory, an integral part of the College, is in membership of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools. The -Headmaster of the Preparatory, Mr. R. H. Tostevin, is responsible for its internal organisation and administration, and all enquiries should be addressed direct to him.

The Preparatory is housed in a separate building within the College grounds and faces Southwest, overlooking the town of S. Helier. Although it is only five minutes' walk from the town centre, it is in a singularly quiet and rural setting. There is ample playground space, and the main College games fields, which are used by the Preparatory, are only a few hundred yards away.


Admission to the Preparatory is by means of an entry test, set in April annually for entry in September. Boys must normally have reached the age of seven before entry.

The entry test will consist of the following :

ENGLISH

a. Two oral reading tests.

b. Simple comprehension test.

c. Composition of a simple story.

ARITHMETIC — Two papers

a. Mechanical.

b. Problem.


The Staff consists of seven assistant masters and two ladies. All are qualified and the majority hold University degrees. Art, Music and Physical Education are taught by the appropriate College Staff, All activities are organised on a House basis. The Houses bear the same names as those at College, and continuity is thus ensured when a boy enters the College, between II and 12 years of age. The curriculum at the Preparatory is designed to prepare boys for the College Entrance Examination


The full school hours are :

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday —

9.0a.m. to 12.15 p.m.

2.0 p.m. to 4.0 p.m.

Thursday, Saturday — 9.0 a.m. to 12.45 p.m.

 

Hot lunches are provided at College House at a daily charge of 2/-. The meal is supervised by a member of the Staff.

 

There is no boarding house attached to the Preparatory, but members of the Staff take boarders.

Fees are payable Termly, in advance.

 

* The Entrance Fee is refunded only if the boy fails to pass the Entrance Examination to the Preparatory.

 

Both papers are based on a thorough knowledge of the four rules in number together with simple addition and subtraction of money involving amounts up to 3/-. Candidates are expected to know 2,3,4,5 and 6 times multiplication tables.

INTERVIEW

The papers are graded according to .the age of candidate.


Boys can be removed at the end of any term, but a half term's notice in writing is required. If this is not done, half a term's fees will be payable.

A boy who enters at half-term or thereafter is charged half a term's fees ; otherwise a full term's fees are payable.

No allowance can be made for absence caused by illness, but parents can take advantage of a Schools Fees Insurance scheme through the school.

The school uniform consists of grey flannel suit (a blazer is optional), grey or white shirt, school stockings and tie, school cap and black shoes. Sandals and ankle socks are allowed in the summer term.

Except with the permission of the Headmaster, all boys below the Vlth forms must wear short trousers. A clothing list will be sent on application. The school outfitters are Messrs. Le Poidevin, King Street, Jersey.
