13th to 15th Century
In this period, the Sovereign as Duke of Normandy, instructed Commissioners to hold Assizes and Investigations regarding Channel Island Crown Fiefs to maintain the good order of his lands. The scope of these lands, tenements and rentes were recorded in Extentes. From the 12th century Assizes were held every three years and were conducted by visiting Justices from Normandy. From the 13th century the Wardens or the Gardiens/Bailiffs were responsible. Visiting Justices from England were also commissioned to inquire into complaints against the Administration. A few Assize Rolls (recorded in the latin language) and some Extentes survive today (the National Archives, Kew) and are the only proof of the family names of Channel Islanders of that time. If a name was found repeated in subsequent documents it is not listed here a second time, for the sake of brevity. Some other surviving documents, from this early time, included the names:-
